The vision of the Prevention program is to see the Southern Kenai Peninsula become a place that is free of intimate partner violence, sexual violence, and substance abuse and that cultivates healthy relationships and resilient families.
The goal of primary prevention is to stop violence and substance abuse before it happens. Primary prevention strategies reduce factors that put people at risk for perpetrating or being victimized by violence, or engaging in substance abuse. These strategies, which are based out of Haven House as well as other community organizations, also strengthen the factors that “protect people or buffer them from risk.” Some examples of these strategies include Green Dot, Girls on the Run, the Resilience Coalition, Opioid Task Force, History and Hope, and many more! Youth education and empowerment are an integral part of a majority of these strategies, and we enjoy working with partners like the Rec Room to deliver education to students on the SKP.
One way that you as community members can get involved is through volunteering! Are you someone who wants to see the young girls of this community become strong and healthy women? Sign up to be a Girls on the Run Coach!
